Danny was the sump pump operator in the Soudan iron ore mine. Agnes would grow the most amazing vegetables in her garden. And every year, we would visit them and go roadside blueberry picking. Kay and I just returned from a canoe-fly fishing trip with Harry and Mary during which they introduced us to the fabulous jams and peppered smoked bacon. On our return trip to Arkansas we stopped at the Ely store and stocked up on sauerkraut, jams, bacon, and sausages. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent! I live outside of Philadelphia which has a rich assortment of Italian foods, an exciting Italian market and lots of homemade meat preparations. Some merchants even sell what they call a Porketta. However, nothing I have tried comes close to yours! I can't wait for spring to begin ordering Porchetta's from Zup's for the grill! Even my neighbors love the smell and recognize it instantly! We were up visiting friends that live in Castle Danger and they took us up to the Silver Bay store where I picked up some Polish sausage. I had them for lunch and went back the next day for a supply to take home - boy was I upset that there weren't any left!! Since it's time for my Christmas order of jerky for the entire family, I remembered from our last trip you had a web address. For 13 years we've stayed at the beautiful Big Lake Wilderness Lodge and for 13 years we've shopped a Zup's!!! The homemade jerky is the best we've ever tried and a true family tradition. My dad, Joe Fink, was born and raised in Ely. His sister, Francis, married Leonard Zup. We have fond memories of visiting the store as children when we would visit family. The last time I was there was 1998 with my children. A lot had changed in Ely, but it was good to see Zup's was still there. Was looking for sausage making supplies and happened on your site. Sounds good! Spent every summer in Ely from about 1930 to 40. Had relatives in Calumet location and in town. Many pleasant memories. Have fished White Iron Lake and visited Wolf Center in recent years. The deli helped me (& 12 people) out of a lunch time jam! Thank you very much for all of your hard work. After visiting my sister and brother in-law in Ely, we discovered Zup's stuffed chicken and stuffed pork chops. Those products are just out of this world. They moved to California about 1900. I remember the Potica bread my GM made and taught my mother to make. If my memory is correct, they used butter, cream, nuts, raisins, cinnamon, and nutmeg as filling. This mixture was spread on rolled bread dough and then rolled up jelly roll fashion. Tossed them into a crock pot with a jar (quart?) of Zup's kraut, a large onion (coarse chop, and a teaspoon of caraway seeds. Cooked for 6-8 hours.
